DETECTIVE COMPANY
Letter to Player
Dear Player:

My name’s Emma Peters. I will call you “Player” from here on out, as long as it’s okay with you. My mom used to sing lullabies to me, or so I’m told, and she called me the “American Girl”. But, like you, I am born a Brit and will someday die a Brit. It makes no difference to me that you, like me, now live in Chicago. We are still at heart, subjects of the Queen of England.

Know that I desire to introduce myself into your presence as the second chosen “Player” in which the honorable Sherlock Holmes and his colleague Dr. Watson have decided to include us in. Likewise, I also know that I must exercise caution in penning you this letter because I do not want to seem too forward or tell you about the story of my short life. I merely want you to know that I am happy to have someone to compete against as the “Apprentice” of Dr. Holmes. But, let’s not call it a competition because I want nothing more but to become your buddy, your sister and your closest Sleuth of sorts.

It appears that we have both been given an opportunity of a lifetime. As Apprentices in their most highly esteemed Apprenticeship program, you will be the only person that I will call family. Like you must also feel, I feel utter excitement and joy to have been handpicked as a contestant to solve what must be the most important case in the existence of Sherlock Holmes’ Detective solving history. I realize that only one of us can bring home the first place trophy, unless we rig the results. You see, we both are obviously winners and for that reason, we were both chosen by Holmes and Watson. Let us win together because there is non other detective agency than this one that outshines even Scotland Yard as far as solving the hardest, darkest and troublesome cases is concerned.

My hands shook when I got the invitation in the mail. Like you, I can’t wait to practice with the utter best detective in the world. It was such a relief to see that I had been one of two finalists from thousand of entries from around the world. Somehow, I managed to gain my composure since I never really expected to be learning with the highly esteemed likes of you since, for one reason, I’m a girl.

I do not know why people are so scatterbrained as to believe that women must be content as homemakers? Not I. I will solve any mystery Holmes throws at me. But, I am not cutthroat and the purpose of this short note of introduction was not only to let you know that the rest of my letters will be sent to you via telegram; but that I also want to semi entertain you by graciously requesting that no matter what happens or what is required of us, let’s team up and make Holmes choose the both of us.

I’m a rebel of sorts having graduated from the school of hard knocks and because of it; I cannot find it easy to trust anyone. Therefore, I have included a drop of blood from my very own pinky, or shall I say, pinkie in our native Scottish English verbiage? You are to do the same in your return letter to me as soon as you are in receipt of this correspondence. I realize that I barely know myself; but for some reason, I feel as though I have known you my entire life just from reading the enclosure about you that Holmes included in my coveted Apprenticeship invitation. I’m so looking forward to hearing from you and most of all, to soon meet you so that we can give Holmes and Watson a run for their efforts for this highest honor of being trained in their care.

Regards,

Emma Peters
